My name is Kelsea Adams and I have a passion for teaching! I have experience teaching all ages in many different areas of work.
I have been dancing since the age of two at Backstage Studio of Dance in my hometown and teaching the art of dance for 5 years now. At my studio I walk in hearing “Hi Miss Kelsea!”, “MISS KELSEA!!!!” or my all time favorite “Lets attack Miss Kelsea with hugs!”. Over the years I have built such a strong relationship with these children and have guided them from their first Mommy and Me class to their very first time on stage in their brand new glittering tap shoes. The privilege I have been given is absolutely incredible and I am so thank full I was able to teach these children. I teach every single day Monday-Sunday and enjoy every minute of it! There are many different reactions when I tell people that I am a dance teacher, most along the lines of “Oh that’s fun because it’s so easy”. Well think again… I have had to change diapers, clean cuts when they slip on the floor, give big hugs and wipe their tears as we pull away from mommy and daddy, clean their nose, and one of my favorites clean the puddle of pee that happened to also get on me when someone had an accident.
Although all of these are the many experiences you get working with children, there are just so much more. These kids learn to trust you just as much as their family and over the dance year they become more comfortable each and every day. The relationships that I build with these children grow so strong as I teach them basic motor skills, listening skills, and social skills at such a crucial period. Not only has teaching dance opened my eyes to the teaching world, but it has also opened so many other doors. I began to become close with their families and help their kids get over certain fears and develop certain skills such as going to the bathroom by themselves and learning to stay seated while I play the music. These families have let me into their own homes and I started to not only babysit their other children, but also tutor their older ones. Teaching dance at my dance studio was one experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world and I can’t wait to teach when I go back home.
Another area in which I was able to instill my love for teaching was with a club called Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a nationwide club that helps to create one on one relationship with children who have disabilities. I participated in this club for all four years of high school and I hope to continue here at URI. I held an officer position all four years as Vice President and it was outstanding! It is something that makes you feel on top of the world when you can relate to someone and teach him or her a new skill. My buddy’s name was Annie and she was extremely shy at the beginning of the year, but she soon warmed up to me. Normally I would have to run all of the socials and set up all of the activities, so it was very difficult to have a buddy while you were trying to lead fifty people at the same time. As time went by, Annie began to follow me and I asked her one day if she would like to help me out! Not only did Annie become outgoing, but I was able to teach Annie how to become a leader. This was one of the most rewarding years in Best Buddies because I was able to help this quiet and confined girl come out of her shell and not be embarrassed to lead the group!
As you can see, I have an extreme love for teaching no matter if someone is younger, older or my peer and I would love to be able to continue this passion in my future career. This year at URI I am involved in a program called Jumpstart in which we work with children in preschools in the surrounding area. I am so excited for this journey to start and I know it will be something I will look forward to because it is something I truly know I am good at, teaching!
